A new shuffle feature to tackle video choice indecision.
Introduction
YouTube is experimenting with a floating ‘Play Something’ button, reminiscent of Google’s famous "I’m Feeling Lucky" feature. This addition aims to simplify video discovery by randomly selecting content for users, offering an effortless way to explore the platform.
What Is the ‘Play Something’ Button?
The button appears just above the bottom bar in the YouTube Android app.
On tapping, it picks a random video for playback.
The feature primarily uses the YouTube Shorts player, even for non-Shorts content.
A Familiar Concept
YouTube has tested variations of this feature for over a year, including banners and logo-based buttons. The concept echoes Netflix’s ‘Play Something’, designed for viewers unable to decide on content.
What to Expect
While the current implementation focuses on Shorts, improvements are expected before a wider release to ensure better compatibility with standard videos.
