Over the past few days, YouTube users have raised concerns that the platform might be making it more difficult to skip ads. Reports surfaced on Reddit about black rectangles covering the skip button on desktop, while others noted that the countdown timer to skip ads seemed to have disappeared on mobile devices. These observations sparked widespread discussions about whether YouTube was actively hiding or removing the much-loved skip button on ads.

However, in a statement made to The Verge, YouTube assured users that they are not removing the skip button. Instead, the platform is introducing some visual changes to how ads are displayed.

What’s Changing with YouTube Ads?

YouTube spokesperson Oluwa Falodun clarified the issue, stating, “YouTube is not hiding the skip button.” The familiar skip button will still appear after 5 seconds of playback on skippable ads, just as it always has. What’s changing, according to Falodun, are the visual elements of the ad player itself. YouTube is reportedly “reducing elements on the ads player” to create a cleaner experience for viewers.

Instead of the traditional countdown timer that lets users know when they can skip an ad, some users may now see a progress bar at the bottom of the screen. The intention behind this change is to make the viewing experience more seamless while still maintaining the option to skip ads after the initial 5 seconds.

Cleaner Design, but Why the Confusion?

The redesign of YouTube’s ad player seems to be causing some confusion among users. The transition from a countdown timer to a progress bar is subtle but significant, and many users are accustomed to watching the countdown to know when they can hit the skip button. Without a clear numerical indicator, it’s understandable that some users may feel that YouTube is making it harder to skip ads. However, YouTube has reassured that the skip button itself is still there and works the same way.

While YouTube has clarified that it isn’t hiding the skip button, the platform is continuing to expand how and where ads are displayed. One of the recent developments is that pause screens are now considered fair game for ads, meaning users may start seeing ads even when they pause a video.
