U-tec’s new smart lock promises faster, more reliable auto-unlocking using UWB, with future support for Apple Home’s hands-free features.

U-tec has introduced the Ultraloq Bolt Mission, the first smart lock to leverage Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology for automatic, proximity-based unlocking. Unlike existing auto-unlock systems that use Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or GPS—often criticized for their slow and unreliable performance—UWB promises a faster, more accurate, and seamless unlocking experience as you approach your door.

This innovation marks a significant milestone in smart home technology, especially for users seeking a truly hands-free and secure unlocking experience.

The Power of Ultra Wideband for Smart Locks

Ultra Wideband technology is making waves in digital car keys, and now it’s entering the smart lock market with U-tec’s Ultraloq Bolt Mission UWB Plus NFC. This wireless protocol enables precise location tracking, allowing your UWB-compatible phone or watch to communicate directly with the lock over short distances. Unlike traditional methods that rely on approximate signals, UWB can determine your exact position and even recognize whether you are approaching the door from the outside or inside, ensuring that auto-unlocking is both fast and secure.

Unlocking Flexibility: UWB, NFC, and More

In addition to UWB, the Ultraloq Bolt Mission offers multiple methods to unlock your door. It supports NFC (Near Field Communication), allowing users with Android NFC-enabled phones to tap and unlock the door. While Apple’s Home Key feature for hands-free unlocking is not yet available, U-tec has promised future compatibility with Apple’s NFC unlocking through Matter, the smart home standard.

Moreover, the lock supports remote access through popular platforms like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, and Apple Home via Wi-Fi and Matter.

Traditional Access Methods Still Included

While UWB and NFC technologies are at the heart of the Ultraloq Bolt Mission, U-tec hasn’t abandoned traditional access methods. The lock includes a keypad for entering PIN codes and comes with a traditional key option. This makes the smart lock versatile, ensuring that you always have a backup method to unlock your door.

Battery Life and Durability

The Ultraloq Bolt Mission runs on eight AA batteries, which U-tec claims will provide up to one year of battery life. This ensures long-lasting performance without frequent battery replacements. The lock itself is a full deadbolt replacement, designed for durability and ease of use.

Future-Proofing with Apple Home and Aliro

Although Apple recently announced support for UWB unlocking in smart locks through Apple Home, the Ultraloq Bolt Mission is a bit early for these features. U-tec has assured users that the next version of the lock, set to arrive in 2025, will be compatible with Apple’s hands-free Home Key and the upcoming Aliro smart access standard.

In the meantime, the current version of the Ultraloq Bolt Mission offers Matter support, which allows it to work seamlessly with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and other major smart home platforms for remote access and control.

Precision Unlocking with UWB and NFC Technology

One of the standout features of the Ultraloq Bolt Mission is its use of both UWB and NFC technology to ensure that only authorized users can unlock the door. The lock communicates with the user’s device to determine its precise location relative to the door, enabling quick and secure auto-unlocking. According to U-tec, the lock’s performance is smooth and reliable, offering a significant upgrade over traditional smart locks.

What’s Next for Smart Locks?

As UWB technology continues to gain momentum, the Ultraloq Bolt Mission sets the stage for a new era in smart home security. While the current model offers impressive functionality and flexibility, U-tec’s roadmap for 2025 promises even more exciting developments, including hands-free UWB unlocking and Apple Home integration.

For now, the Ultraloq Bolt Mission is shaping up to be one of the most advanced smart locks on the market, combining cutting-edge technology with traditional access methods for a versatile, secure, and convenient solution.
