Meta begins experimenting with advertisements on Threads in the US and Japan.

Introduction

Threads, Meta's Twitter-like social platform, is officially rolling out ads as part of a limited test. According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, this early experiment will involve a select group of brands in the US and Japan, marking the first step towards monetizing the platform.

How Ads Will Appear

Ads on Threads will be interspersed as images between posts in the home feed. Meta plans to analyze user reactions and engagement during this trial phase before expanding ads more broadly.

Ad Targeting and Customization

To tailor ads, Meta will utilize data such as user activity on Threads and Instagram, interaction with posts, email addresses, and even off-Meta browsing behaviors. Users will also have the option to manage their ad preferences via the account center, with features to hide, skip, or report ads.

Meta’s Vision for Ads on Threads

While Mosseri had confirmed the inevitability of ads last April, this test paves the way for their full rollout in early 2025. The cautious approach shows Meta's intent to balance user experience with monetization.
