The upcoming Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL are set to revolutionize selfie photography with a significant upgrade to their front-facing cameras. According to leaked marketing materials shared with Android Authority, both models will feature 50-megapixel autofocusing selfie cameras.

Advanced Camera Technology

The selfie camera, along with the rear-facing ultrawide and telephoto cameras, is rumored to incorporate 50MP Sony IMX858 image sensors. Meanwhile, the primary rear camera may boast a 50MP sensor from Samsung. This blend of high-resolution sensors is expected to deliver superior image quality and enhanced photographic capabilities.

An early glimpse of the Pixel 9 Pro's camera performance can be seen in a TikTok video, showcasing its up to 30x Super Res Zoom—similar to the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8. The device in the video matches the leaked hardware previously shown by the same account.

Base Model Enhancements

The base Pixel 9 is also expected to see improvements, albeit with a relatively modest 10.5MP selfie cam equipped with autofocus. While not as impressive as the Pro models' 50MP rear camera, it's still an upgrade from the 10MP selfie cam on the Pixel 8, which lacks autofocus. The standard Pixel 9's rear camera setup will likely include the same 50MP Samsung main camera sensor and the 50MP Sony ultrawide sensor found in the Pro models, but without the telephoto lens.

Pixel Fold 2 Updates

On another note, the rumored Pixel Fold 2 might receive only minor camera upgrades, according to Android Authority. However, there's speculation that Google is working on integrating 8K video encoding at 30 frames per second. Details on which Pixel devices will support this feature and its availability at launch remain unknown.

Upcoming Google Hardware Event

Keep an eye out for these exciting upgrades, including the rumored ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, during Google's hardware event on August 13th.
