Go big, go small, or go slim? Apple has never quite figured out what to do with its fourth iPhone model.
The iPhone Slim model is rumored to replace the iPhone Plus in 2025, potentially as the iPhone 17 Slim. A new report from Apple supply chain expert Ming-Chi Kuo corroborates earlier claims, suggesting that Apple's shapeshifting non-Pro iPhone is set to evolve once again.
The Next Evolution in iPhone Design
Kuo confirms that the Slim model will feature a 6.6-inch screen and a single rear-facing camera. Additionally, it will incorporate Apple’s in-house 5G chip. However, the Slim model won’t directly replace the Plus; instead, it represents "new design trends beyond the existing iPhone lineup." This aligns with rumors that it might cost more than the $1,200 (approx. ₹99,000) Pro Max.
Apple’s Struggle with the Non-Pro iPhone
Apple has had a challenging time determining the ideal form for its second non-Pro iPhone. Initially, it was the Mini, which didn’t sell well. Then, it became the Plus. Now, according to Kuo, Apple plans to discontinue the Plus due to its low sales performance, accounting for only 5-10 percent of new iPhone shipments. Starting next year, the Plus may be out, and the Slim model in.
Why the Shift?
iPhone users are holding onto their devices longer than before, and Apple wants to encourage more frequent upgrades. The company's strategy seems to involve experimenting with different sizes and features to reignite the upgrade cycle. The introduction of the Slim model might be another attempt to find the right formula.
The Excitement of a Slim iPhone
The idea of a slim iPhone is intriguing. It could fit more comfortably in pockets, though it might also be more prone to accidental damage. There’s also potential for creative uses, like combining two slim iPhones to create a makeshift foldable device.
A Stepping Stone to a Foldable iPhone?
Realistically, the iPhone Slim could be the latest iteration of Apple's obsession with slim devices. However, there is hope that this could be a precursor to a foldable iPhone. A clamshell-style folding phone, similar to the Motorola Razr or the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, would offer significant advantages over a traditional iPhone. For those who love their compact iPhones, like the iPhone 13 Mini, Apple will need to innovate compellingly to convince them to upgrade.
Conclusion
Apple's continuous experimentation with its non-Pro iPhone models reflects its efforts to find the perfect balance of size, features, and price to encourage frequent upgrades. Whether the iPhone Slim will succeed where the Mini and Plus did not remains to be seen. However, it certainly adds excitement to the future of iPhone design.
