The new Spotify Mix typeface is a ‘remix’ of various fonts inspired by the ‘evolving nature of audio culture.’ Apparently.
Spotify’s latest update introduces a significant visual change aimed at enhancing the user experience not through sound, but through sight. Starting today, Spotify Mix — the company's new bespoke typeface — is being rolled out to replace the Circular typeface variant currently used across its app and desktop experiences.
A Homage to Audio Culture
The name "Spotify Mix" pays tribute to the “dynamic and evolving nature of audio culture over the years,” according to Rasmus Wängelin, Spotify’s global head of brand design. Developed in collaboration with Berlin-based foundry Dinamo Typefaces, this new variable font design is described by Wängelin as “quite literally, a remix” that merges elements from a variety of typeface styles.
The Unique Design of Spotify Mix
Spotify Mix is a sans-serif typeface that blends features from both classic and contemporary styles, resulting in a distinctive and unique look. Wängelin explains that the design subtly incorporates the shapes of sound waves to evoke a rhythmic feel. The combination of sharp angles and smooth curves gives the typeface a distinctive character that feels quintessentially Spotify.

Versatility and Flexibility
Spotify Mix will be used on everything from playlists to marketing campaigns. As a variable font, it allows for easy customization of attributes like weight, width, and slant without the need for separate files. This provides Spotify with creative flexibility, enabling playlist covers, promos, and other content to appear more varied while maintaining a cohesive design.
Updating the Spotify Logo
The Spotify logo’s wordmark will also be updated to the new typeface. This change is already visible on the company’s news portal. Initially, languages with Latin-based scripts and written content in Vietnamese will adopt Spotify Mix, with a gradual rollout “over the coming weeks.”
Enhancing User Experience
By integrating Spotify Mix across its platform, Spotify aims to create a more engaging and visually appealing user experience. The new typeface is designed to reflect the brand’s identity and resonate with its diverse user base. Whether you’re browsing playlists or reading content within the app, the updated font aims to make navigation more intuitive and enjoyable.
Conclusion
Spotify Mix represents more than just a new typeface; it’s a strategic move to reinforce the brand’s visual identity while celebrating the rich and evolving culture of audio. As the font rolls out across Spotify’s platforms, users can expect a fresh and cohesive look that enhances their overall experience.
