The new Oura Ring 4 boasts improved design, enhanced features, and an updated app interface.
Oura has officially announced its Oura Ring 4, the latest version of its highly popular smart ring, and it comes with significant updates. Priced at $349 (₹29,000), the new Oura Ring 4 features a sleeker design, better sensor accuracy, and an expanded size range. Alongside the hardware updates, Oura is also rolling out a complete redesign of its app, making it more user-friendly and organizing the growing number of features for health and fitness tracking.
Oura Ring 4: What’s New?
At first glance, the Oura Ring 4 looks similar to its predecessor, the Gen 3, but the changes in design and functionality are substantial. Here’s what’s new:
1. Sleeker, More Comfortable Design
The Oura Ring 4 is now made entirely of titanium, compared to the previous model’s epoxy interior, which enhances its durability and comfort. It will be fully round, similar to the Horizon models, without the flat edge seen in some older versions.
One of the most noticeable improvements is the removal of the dome-shaped sensor covers. The sensors are now recessed, creating a flatter profile for a more comfortable fit, especially during everyday wear. This change is designed to reduce discomfort and improve accuracy by keeping the sensors aligned with your finger throughout the day.
2. Improved Accuracy and Battery Life
Oura has addressed one of the common issues with smart rings — maintaining accurate readings despite the natural movement of your fingers. The new algorithm in the Oura Ring 4 significantly improves signal detection by increasing the number of signal pathways from eight to 18. This ensures that the sensors can select the best signal at any given time, leading to a 30% improvement in blood oxygen tracking accuracy and reducing gaps in heart rate data by 7% during the day and 31% at night.
Additionally, the new algorithm is said to improve battery life. Depending on the size of the ring, the battery can now last up to eight days. As expected, larger sizes generally have longer battery life due to their ability to house a bigger battery.
3. Expanded Size Range
The Oura Ring 4 now comes in a broader size range, accommodating more users. It will be available in sizes 4 to 15, whereas previous models only ranged from sizes 6 to 13. This change is partly in response to Oura’s expanding user base, with women in their 20s now representing the fastest-growing demographic. The new size options make the ring more inclusive and wearable for a wider audience.
4. Revamped Charging Dock
The new ring comes with a revamped charging dock, but it doesn’t include a carrying case. While this might be a minor downside for some, the new dock is designed to be more efficient and sleek, complementing the ring’s modern design.
Oura App Redesign: Simplifying Health Tracking
Alongside the Oura Ring 4, the Oura app is also getting a comprehensive makeover. The app’s interface has become increasingly cluttered over time with the introduction of features for stress tracking, reproductive health, heart health, and the experimental Labs beta program. To streamline the experience, the app will now be divided into three main sections:
Today Tab: A dynamic overview of your biometrics, adjusted according to the time of day and your health goals.
Vitals Tab: This section allows users to dive deeper into their metrics, scores, and health data.
My Health Tab: Focuses on long-term trends, giving users a broader perspective on their overall health journey.
New Features in the Oura App
Oura is rolling out several new features to complement the Ring 4 and its revamped app. These include:
Daytime Stress Metric: The improved stress tracking feature now provides more accurate insights throughout the day.
Automatic Activity Detection: The ring can now automatically detect and categorize 40 different activity types, making it easier to track your workouts without manually entering data.
Fertile Window Prediction: For users looking to conceive, Oura now offers fertile window predictions. However, the company emphasizes that this feature is not meant for contraception, instead pointing users toward its partnership with Natural Cycles for fertility awareness methods.
Oura’s Labs program is also finally coming to Android, which will delight Android users who’ve been waiting for this experimental feature.
Price and Availability in India
The Oura Ring 4 starts at $349 (₹29,000) and will begin shipping on October 15th. While the price has increased by $50 (₹4,150) compared to the previous generation, the added features and improvements might justify the cost for many users. The Oura Ring Gen 3 will remain available for purchase until inventory runs out, providing a slightly more affordable option for those who don’t need the latest updates.
The Oura Ring 4 is also HSA and FSA eligible, making it a more attractive option for users with health savings accounts.
Final Thoughts
The Oura Ring 4 is a substantial upgrade over the previous generation, with a focus on comfort, accuracy, and broader accessibility. Whether you’re tracking your sleep, stress levels, or heart health, this smart ring provides a wealth of data in a sleek, minimalist design. The expanded size range and redesigned app further improve the user experience, making it easier for more people to enjoy the benefits of wearable health technology.
For Indian users, the price of ₹29,000 is on the higher side, but given the comprehensive features and long battery life, the Oura Ring 4 stands out as one of the best options for those looking to invest in health tracking devices.
