New Delhi, October 5, 2024 — Popular tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, better known as MKBHD, has made significant changes to his wallpaper app, Panels, following user backlash over pricing and the ad structure for free accounts. The recent update brings welcome news for users of the free version, as it now allows them to download high-resolution wallpapers after watching just one ad.

Initially, the app required users to subscribe to the Panels Plus service, priced at $11.99 per month or $49.99 per year, in order to access full-resolution wallpapers. Moreover, free users were previously subjected to two ads before they could download standard-definition wallpapers. This setup received heavy criticism, but with the latest update, the app now lets users download standard-definition images without the need to watch any ads, greatly improving the user experience.

Key Updates in the New Version:

  • High-Resolution Wallpapers for Free Users: Free users can now access high-resolution images by watching a single ad, a major shift from the previous requirement of subscribing to the premium version.

  • Ad-Free Explore Page: Ads have been completely removed from the app’s explore page, allowing users to discover and download new wallpapers without distractions.

  • New Artwork Added: In addition to the ad changes, new wallpaper art has been introduced to keep the app’s library fresh and exciting for users.

While the update primarily focuses on the app’s free users, no changes have been made to the pricing of Panels Plus, the premium version of the app. This is in line with MKBHD’s statement that the goal is to deliver enough value to make the premium subscription worthwhile for those willing to invest in it.

Despite the lack of price adjustments for the premium plan, these improvements are expected to draw more users to Panels by offering a better balance between free and paid experiences.

The Panels app remains available for download on both Android and iOS platforms, offering a wide variety of high-quality wallpapers curated by MKBHD and his team.
