Microsoft 365 Copilot brings advanced AI-powered features to Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams, boosting productivity and efficiency.
Microsoft is rolling out a host of new features for its Microsoft 365 Copilot that aim to further enhance AI integration within its popular Office apps. The new capabilities, available as part of the $30 per user monthly subscription for Microsoft 365 Copilot, promise to make Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other tools more efficient and intuitive, helping users tackle advanced tasks with ease.
Among the most notable updates is the integration of Python in Excel, new AI-assisted PowerPoint narrative builders, and a prioritize inbox feature in Outlook. Additionally, Microsoft 365 Copilot will make it easier to summarize meetings in Teams and compare documents in OneDrive.
Python-Powered Excel: No Coding Required
In a major update for data enthusiasts, Microsoft has combined its Python support with Copilot in Excel. This integration allows users to conduct advanced data analysis without needing any coding expertise. Tasks like forecasting, risk analysis, and even machine learning can now be performed using natural language commands.
“Now, anyone can work with Copilot to conduct advanced analysis like forecasting, risk analysis, machine learning, and visualizing complex data — all using natural language, no coding required,” said Jared Spataro, corporate vice president of AI at work at Microsoft. Essentially, users now have access to an AI-powered data analyst that simplifies complex tasks.
Additionally, Copilot in Excel now supports XLOOKUP, SUMIF, conditional formatting, and has improved its ability to generate charts and PivotTables. This update marks a significant leap forward in how Excel handles data analysis, making it more accessible to all users.
PowerPoint's Improved AI Narrative Builder
For PowerPoint, Microsoft has enhanced the narrative builder in Copilot, allowing users to quickly create a first draft of their slideshows. One standout feature is the ability for the AI assistant to automatically use a company’s branded template to generate presentations, even pulling in company-approved images from SharePoint libraries.
This new feature is designed to help professionals save time while maintaining a consistent corporate identity across presentations. Whether you’re building a simple deck or a detailed presentation, Copilot can now assist with structure and visuals, ensuring that your slide deck is both informative and visually appealing.
Outlook Inbox Gets Smarter with AI
One of the most requested features for Copilot in Outlook is finally here. A new "prioritize my inbox" feature lets the AI assistant automatically sort and highlight important emails. This marks a significant improvement beyond simple email drafting and summaries, helping users tackle overwhelming inboxes with ease.
In addition, later this year, users will be able to teach Copilot the specific keywords, topics, or contacts that are important to them. This will allow Copilot to mark those emails as high priority, ensuring you never miss a critical message again.
Teams: Summarizing Conversations Made Easy
Microsoft is also improving Copilot in Teams by allowing it to summarize conversations that occurred both in text chat and during meetings. This feature will be especially useful for meeting organizers who want to ensure no questions go unanswered, even if they were typed in the chat.
“Our customers tell us Copilot in Teams has changed meetings forever — in fact, it’s the number one place they’re seeing value,” noted Spataro. The feature ensures that meetings are more productive and organized, reducing the risk of miscommunication or missed details.
OneDrive’s AI-Driven File Comparison Tool
In OneDrive, Copilot will soon make it easier to compare files. With this new feature, users can compare up to five different documents to spot discrepancies or changes between versions. This will help streamline the often tedious process of reviewing multiple versions of a file, especially in collaborative environments where numerous team members might edit the same document.
A Focus on Business Users: Vodafone’s Major Copilot Deal
Despite some reports suggesting a lukewarm reception to Microsoft’s $30 per user pricing, Microsoft continues to build strong momentum with major clients. One key success story is Vodafone, which recently signed up for 68,000 Microsoft 365 Copilot licenses for its 100,000 employees. After trialing the AI assistant, Vodafone saw enough value in the technology to make it a core part of its workflow.
Microsoft reports that 60% of Fortune 500 companies now use Copilot, and the number of users employing the AI tool at work has nearly doubled quarter-over-quarter.
What’s Next for Microsoft 365 Copilot?
As Microsoft continues to roll out these AI-enhanced features across its suite of Office apps, the company is clearly positioning Copilot as a key productivity tool for businesses. Whether it's advanced data analysis in Excel, inbox management in Outlook, or file comparison in OneDrive, Copilot’s capabilities are set to make everyday tasks simpler and faster.
With companies like Vodafone embracing the technology, Microsoft’s push into AI-powered office tools is gaining traction. However, whether businesses will adopt the premium version of Copilot at scale remains to be seen, especially given the current concerns around cost and performance.
