AI-generated content will still be labeled upfront, but AI-modified media will now require an extra click to view the label.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, has announced a major update to how it labels content that has been modified using generative AI tools. In a move that could change how users perceive edited content on its platforms, the company will make AI-related tags less prominent for content that has been merely adjusted or modified using AI, rather than fully generated by it.

This update, detailed in a new Meta blog post, introduces a subtle but important shift. Instead of displaying the "AI Info" label directly beneath the user's name for AI-modified images and videos, Meta will now tuck this label behind a menu located in the top-right corner of the post. This means that users will need to click the menu to access the AI information, which will reveal whether AI tools were used to adjust the content.

AI-Edited vs. AI-Generated: Clearer Distinctions

Meta's decision to make AI-edited labels less prominent comes in response to concerns from creators and users alike. Previously, any content modified with AI features—whether lightly edited in tools like Photoshop or fully generated from scratch—was automatically tagged with the same label. This led to confusion, especially among photographers and content creators, whose genuine images were being incorrectly tagged as AI-generated.

With this new update, Meta seeks to differentiate between fully AI-generated content and content that has only been modified using AI-enhanced editing tools. The company says that the change aims to “better reflect the extent of AI used” in the creation of images and videos on its platforms.

How the New Labeling System Works

The "AI Info" tag will still appear for all AI-generated content but will now be less visible for media that has simply been tweaked using AI-powered tools. Users will need to access the menu in the top-right corner of the post to view details about the AI modifications. Once they click, they'll see the specific adjustments made by AI tools, providing transparency while allowing creators to present their work without an immediate AI label.

The change addresses complaints from users who felt that their edited images, particularly those using minor AI enhancements, were unfairly tagged as “AI-generated.” Meta's previous system, introduced in July, applied the same “Made with AI” label to all content involving AI, which caused backlash. The updated system will take a more nuanced approach, only prominently labeling content that was entirely generated by AI from a prompt.

Industry Signals and Transparency

Meta has emphasized that while the AI label for modified content will be hidden behind a menu, fully AI-generated content will still feature the "AI Info" tag upfront. This tag includes details about how the content was created and whether it was flagged by industry-shared signals or disclosed by the creator. These signals refer to metadata systems like Adobe’s Content Credentials (supported by C2PA), which automatically attach information to any content made or edited using AI-powered tools like Firefly.

While Meta has not provided a full list of the systems it uses to detect AI-generated content, it does mention using industry standards like Google’s SynthID digital watermarking system. This technology embeds invisible watermarks into AI-generated images and videos, allowing platforms to identify and label AI-made content.

Balancing Transparency and User Experience

One of the key challenges Meta faces with this update is ensuring that users are not misled by AI-edited content that now lacks a prominent label. As AI editing tools become more advanced and integrated into everyday devices like smartphones, distinguishing between natural photos and AI-modified content is becoming increasingly difficult. While Meta’s goal is to avoid over-tagging genuine media, critics worry that hiding AI labels could make it easier for users to manipulate content without detection.

However, Meta has reassured users that the company will continue to monitor how AI labels are used and adjust its approach if necessary to maintain transparency. Meta's spokesperson noted, “We will still display the ‘AI info’ label for content we detect was generated by an AI tool and share whether the content is labeled because of industry-shared signals or because someone self-disclosed.”

Looking Ahead: AI in Content Creation

As the AI revolution continues to reshape how we create and interact with media, platforms like Facebook and Instagram are under increasing pressure to provide transparency without stifling creativity. By updating how AI labels are applied, Meta is seeking to strike a balance between informing users and ensuring creators have the freedom to enhance their content using AI tools.

This latest update is set to roll out next week, and it’s likely just the beginning of how social media platforms will adapt to the growing use of AI-powered content creation. For now, creators can continue using AI tools without fear of their work being unfairly tagged, and users can still find information about AI involvement when they want to.
