Meta is bringing AI-generated content to Facebook and Instagram feeds, and some images might even include your face.
In a move that could reshape how we experience social media, Meta is gearing up to flood Facebook and Instagram feeds with AI-generated images. Announced during the Meta Connect event on Wednesday, the company revealed it is testing a new feature that generates AI-driven images tailored to users' interests and trends. The twist? Some of these images might include your face.
Personalized AI-Generated Content in Your Feed
The new feature, known as "Imagined for You," will automatically create AI-generated images based on your browsing behavior and preferences. When users encounter one of these images in their feed, they will have options to share the image or even generate a new one in real time. One showcased example features AI-created visuals of enchanted realms, filled with magical atmospheres. However, things get a bit more personal with other images, as they might incorporate your own face into these fantasy worlds.
Imagine scrolling through your feed and seeing an AI-generated version of yourself as a video game character or an astronaut exploring outer space. Meta promises a personalized and immersive experience — though for some, stumbling upon an AI-enhanced image of themselves could feel a little unsettling.
How Does Meta Handle Your Photos?
Meta spokesperson Amanda Felix clarified that the platform will only use your face in AI-generated images if you’ve opted in. By onboarding to Meta’s Imagine Yourself feature, users will have to upload photos and agree to the terms and conditions. If you change your mind, Meta also provides the option to remove AI images from your feed at any time.
Meta's initiative is not entirely without precedent. Recently, 404 Media revealed that Snapchat’s AI selfie feature automatically grants the company permission to use your face for personalized ads — unless users explicitly opt out. Facebook and Instagram’s approach appears to be similar: the AI-generated content is largely for your eyes only, and sharing remains at your discretion.
A “Logical Jump” for Facebook and Instagram
According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, integrating AI-generated images into feeds is the next logical step for the platforms. In an interview with The Verge’s Alex Heath, Zuckerberg reflected on how social media feeds have evolved over time. Initially, feeds were focused solely on content from people you followed. But as time went on, platforms began introducing algorithmically generated content based on user interests.
“And you just add on to that, a layer of, ‘Okay, and we’re also going to show you content that’s generated by an AI system that might be something that you’re interested in’... How big it gets is kind of dependent on the execution and how good it is,” Zuckerberg said.
For now, this AI-powered feature is still in the testing phase, and there’s no definitive timeline for a full-scale rollout. However, Meta’s move seems likely to further shift Facebook and Instagram away from their original purpose of keeping up with friends and more toward a space filled with AI-driven experiences.
What Does This Mean for Social Media?
Meta’s decision to embed AI-generated content in its platforms is another leap toward blending AI technology with social media, signaling a possible transformation in how we engage with content. While these AI-generated images may offer entertainment and personalization, they also raise questions about the future of social interaction in digital spaces. As Facebook and Instagram embrace AI, the distance between users and traditional, human-created content grows even larger.
It remains to be seen how users will react to having their faces and interests woven into AI-generated visuals. But with Meta leading the charge, it’s clear that the integration of AI content into everyday social media experiences is just beginning.
