The signature Pixel "visor" design may be on its way out as Google plans a sleek new look for its budget A-series.
Google is once again making headlines with fresh leaks, this time revealing early renders of its upcoming Pixel 9A. Thanks to Android Headlines and tipster OnLeaks, we now have a glimpse of what Google’s next A-series budget device might look like. The standout feature of this leak? The Pixel’s signature camera visor appears to be missing, marking a departure from the familiar design language that has characterized Pixel phones for the last few generations.
Goodbye Visor, Hello Flush Camera Design
Unlike its predecessors, the Pixel 9A will reportedly ditch the iconic horizontal camera visor in favor of a new pill-shaped camera module. This module, featuring dual rear cameras and a flash, is set almost flush with the back of the phone, giving it a more minimalist appearance. The setup is reminiscent of the iPhone 7 Plus, albeit with more modern enhancements.
The front of the Pixel 9A retains a familiar look, with slim bezels surrounding the display — a design choice that aligns with other phones in the Pixel 9 lineup. The overall aesthetic of the Pixel 9A feels more streamlined, marking a significant shift from the bulkier, visor-centric designs seen in previous Pixel A-series models.
Expected to Ship with Android 15
Leaked reports suggest that the Pixel 9A could ship with Android 15, making it one of the first devices to run on Google’s latest operating system right out of the box. This update would bring improved performance, more customization options, and a host of new features, further enhancing the Pixel's user experience.
Tensor Chips: The End of an Era?
Interestingly, this could also be the last Pixel device to feature Google’s Tensor chips built on Samsung’s architecture. According to the leaks, Google is expected to switch to TSMC for its future processors starting in 2025, which means the Pixel 9A might be the final budget device running on the Samsung-based Tensor chips. This change could have significant implications for the performance and battery life of future Pixel devices, as TSMC’s chips are known for their energy efficiency and processing power.
Release Date and Final Thoughts
Google typically unveils its A-series phones during the spring, around the time of Google I/O, so it may be a while before we have the full details. However, if these renders are accurate, the Pixel 9A is shaping up to be a major refresh in terms of design, shedding some of the bulk in favor of a sleeker and more refined look.
For Pixel fans, the departure from the visor design might be a controversial move, but it signals Google's intent to modernize its budget offerings while staying competitive in a crowded smartphone market.
