The platform wants to make it easier to understand how your content is performing, no matter what the format is.
Instagram is set to make a significant change in how creators measure the success of their content. The social media giant announced that it will make "views" the primary metric across all its formats, allowing creators to track the same metric for Reels, Stories, photos, and more. This change will be rolled out in the coming weeks, according to a post on Instagram's creators account.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, shared the rationale behind this shift in a recent post. “Historically we’ve shown different metrics for Reels vs. other posts, but we want to evolve this so it’s easier to understand how your content is doing regardless of the format,” he wrote. He further clarified in an accompanying video that a view is distinct from reach because the same person can view a piece of content multiple times.
While views will become the new primary metric, Mosseri also advised creators to monitor "sends per reach." He noted that both views and sends per reach are “probably the most important metrics for anybody trying to understand how their content is doing on Instagram.”
Meta, Instagram's parent company, has also emphasized views on its other platform, Threads. Earlier this year, the company introduced a feature that allows users to tap on a Threads post to see its total view count. This mirrors a trend seen on Twitter, now known as X, where Elon Musk has placed a greater focus on view counts since taking over the platform.
This shift to a unified metric system aims to simplify the way creators analyze their performance across different types of content. By focusing on views, Instagram hopes to provide a clearer picture of how content resonates with audiences, regardless of the format.
