The AI label from Meta angered photographers after it tagged real-life pictures that had been retouched in editing tools like Photoshop.
On Monday, Meta announced that it is “updating the ‘Made with AI’ label to ‘AI info’ across our apps, which people can click for more information,” following complaints from users about incorrect tagging of their photos. This move comes after notable figures, such as former White House photographer Pete Souza, highlighted instances where the tag was inappropriately applied. Souza noted the label appearing on an upload of a photo originally taken on film during a basketball game 40 years ago, suspecting that the use of Adobe’s cropping tool and image flattening might have triggered it.
The new "AI Info" label will appear across Meta's platforms.
Meta spokesperson Kate McLaughlin stated, “As we’ve said from the beginning, we’re consistently improving our AI products, and we are working closely with our industry partners on our approach to AI labeling.” The updated label aims to more accurately indicate that the content may have been modified rather than entirely AI-generated.
The core issue appears to stem from how metadata applied by tools like Adobe Photoshop is interpreted by platforms. After Meta expanded its policies around labeling AI content, real-life pictures posted on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads were often inaccurately tagged as “Made with AI.”

Users can expect to see the new “AI Info” label on mobile apps first, with the web view following later. McLaughlin confirmed to The Verge that the rollout is starting across all platforms.
Upon clicking the tag, users will still see the same message as the old label, which includes a detailed explanation of why the tag might have been applied. This explanation covers both fully AI-generated images and those edited with AI-powered tools, such as Generative Fill. The intention behind these tags was to simplify distinguishing between AI-generated and real images, leveraging metadata tagging technology like C2PA. However, this technology has yet to fully deliver on that promise.
