Everyone is doing AI, but few are taking the opportunity to make their laptop lineup more comprehensible while they’re at it.

Buying a laptop from a major manufacturer like HP can be overwhelming due to the plethora of options available. To address this issue, HP is leveraging the current AI trend and the Windows on Arm platform to streamline its laptop lineup, making it simpler for consumers. Gone are the Envy, Pavilion, and Dragonfly series, replaced by the more straightforward OmniBook, EliteBook, and ProBook lines.

A New, Simpler Lineup

HP's refreshed lineup aims to simplify the purchasing process. The new "AI PCs" are categorized into the consumer-focused OmniBook and the corporate-oriented EliteBook and ProBook series. Despite the clearer categories, you may still need a chart to fully understand the differences. The OmniBook X AI and EliteBook Ultra AI, for example, are part of HP’s new naming convention.

The new laptops were showcased during an event in New York City, where HP provided a hands-on preview. The white OmniBook X AI, in particular, stood out with its sleek design.

The AI Revolution in Laptops

The term "AI PC" signifies laptops equipped with a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of at least 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS). The OmniBook X AI and EliteBook Ultra AI feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite 12-core CPUs, which Qualcomm claims can handle 45 TOPS. This hardware enhancement is part of HP’s strategy to future-proof its laptops, making them ready for advanced AI workloads.

Pierre-Antoine Robineau and Cory McElroy, HP’s VPs of consumer and commercial portfolios, explained that these AI capabilities will benefit users through enhanced AI workflows, including tasks like translation and accessibility. While the AI revolution is in its early stages, these features are designed to improve over time.

Key Features and Specifications

The OmniBook X AI and EliteBook Ultra AI come with several AI-powered features:

  • AI Companion Software: Provides access to ChatGPT-3.5 and AI-powered performance optimization.

  • Poly Camera Pro: Offers AI-powered camera controls such as blurred backgrounds, filters, and auto-framing. It works with any webcam and most major videoconferencing apps.

Beyond AI capabilities, both models are designed with high-end specifications:

  • Build and Design: Both laptops are thin (0.55 inches at their thinnest) and lightweight (2.97 pounds). They feature built-in webcam covers for added privacy.

  • Display and Memory: They come with 14-inch 2240 x 1400 touch displays. The OmniBook X AI can be configured with up to 32GB of RAM, while the EliteBook Ultra AI maxes out at 16GB.

  • Performance: HP claims these laptops are about 17 percent faster than a similarly specced MacBook Pro with an M3 processor, thanks to small fans that keep the ARM processors cool.

Battery Life and Pricing

Battery life for both models is impressive, with up to 22 hours of playback time on Netflix and up to 20 days of standby time.

  • OmniBook X AI: Starts at $1,199.99 with 1TB of storage. Shipping begins on June 18th.

  • EliteBook Ultra AI: Starts at $1,699.99, also shipping on June 18th.

Conclusion

HP's new strategy not only embraces the AI trend but also simplifies the laptop buying process, making it more accessible to consumers and businesses alike. With the introduction of the OmniBook and EliteBook series, HP is setting a new standard in laptop design and functionality, combining powerful AI features with streamlined product categories. Keep an eye out for these innovative models hitting the market this summer.
