Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook all have memory reminders — and they can be turned off if you don’t like them.

Memories have a way of sneaking up on us, sometimes when we least expect it. While reminiscing about happy moments can bring warmth to our hearts, being reminded of painful or unwanted memories can stir up distress. In today's digital age, tech giants like Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Facebook have incorporated memory reminders into their platforms. However, if these reminders bring more pain than joy, you'll be glad to know that you can turn them off. Here's how you can take control of your memories across different platforms:

Google Photos:Google Photos offers a Memories feature that showcases past photos and events. If you want to avoid specific memories, you can customize your settings.

  • Desktop App: Navigate to Settings and scroll down to Memories. From there, you can hide specific dates or people, or disable time-based and themed memories altogether.

  • Mobile App: Tap your personal icon, go to Photos settings > Preferences, and select Memories. You can hide people or dates and disable pop-up memories from notifications.

Apple Photos:Apple Photos provides various options to manage memories and prevent unwanted reminders.

  • iPhone App: To control the frequency of certain content or people appearing in memories, tap on a photo, select "Feature This Person Less," and choose the desired option. You can also feature less specific memories from the For You tab. Additionally, you can disable holiday events and memories altogether in the main settings.

Facebook:Facebook Memories often resurfaces past posts and photos, but you can adjust your settings to control these reminders.

  • Desktop App: Navigate to Memories > Notifications in the side menu. You can choose to stop memories altogether or hide memories of specific people, dates, or keywords.

  • Mobile App: Tap your personal icon, select Memories, and go to Settings. Similar to the desktop version, you can choose to stop memories altogether or hide memories based on specific criteria.

OneDrive:Microsoft's OneDrive also offers memory reminders, which you can easily disable.

  • Web: Access OneDrive's Notifications option through the provided link or by clicking on the cog icon > Options > Notifications. Uncheck the box next to "On this day memories are available.

  • Mobile App: Tap on your personal icon, go to Settings > Notifications, and disable notifications for "On this day" and "Memories from last month."

By following these steps, you can regain control over your digital memories and prevent unwanted reminders from causing distress. Whether it's a painful experience or simply a memory you'd rather forget, these platforms offer customizable options to tailor your digital experience according to your preferences. Remember, your mental well-being comes first, and managing your digital memories is just one step towards ensuring a healthier relationship with technology.
