In a world where staying connected is crucial, satellite messaging features on iPhones and Google Pixel devices are proving to be lifesaving tools. Whether you’re caught in the aftermath of a natural disaster or stranded in a remote location, these features allow you to communicate when cellular networks and Wi-Fi are unavailable.

With Hurricane Milton poised to strike the U.S. as the second major hurricane in just a month, infrastructure is under severe strain. In such emergencies, satellite messaging can ensure you remain connected with 911 emergency services, family, and friends, offering a lifeline when traditional communication methods fail. Here’s how to use these satellite features on your iPhone or Google Pixel.

Apple's Emergency SOS via Satellite

Starting with the iPhone 14 series and continuing with newer models, Apple introduced the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature, which allows users to contact emergency services even when cellular or Wi-Fi signals are unavailable.

How to Use Emergency SOS on iPhone:

  1. Dial 911 on your iPhone. If the call fails due to lack of service, tap Emergency Text via Satellite.

  2. Alternatively, open the Messages app, text "911" or "SOS", and select Emergency Services.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to report your emergency, and the service will automatically share key information like your location, battery status, and emergency contacts.

  4. If you’ve set up Medical ID in the Health app, it will also share crucial health data with responders.

This service is entirely free for iPhone users and works outdoors when you have a clear view of the sky. No prior setup is required, making it especially helpful in unexpected situations.

Google Pixel's Satellite SOS

Similarly, Google's Satellite SOS feature is available on the latest Pixel 9 series, offering emergency connectivity for Pixel users. It allows you to reach emergency services even when you're outside the range of a cell tower.

How to Use Satellite SOS on a Pixel:

  1. Open the Google Messages app (ensure it's your default messaging app).

  2. Dial 911. If your phone has no signal, a Satellite SOS option will appear.

  3. Tap Satellite SOS > Use Satellite SOS > Start, and complete the emergency questionnaire that follows.

  4. Your Pixel will guide you to align with a satellite for optimal connection. Remain outside with a clear view of the sky to ensure uninterrupted communication.

This feature is a lifesaver when you're in areas with no cell service, such as remote hiking trails or during power outages caused by disasters like hurricanes.

Introducing Satellite Messaging on iPhone

While Emergency SOS is geared towards life-threatening situations, Apple has introduced a new Messages via Satellite feature with iOS 18. This allows iPhone users to message family and friends even when they’re off the grid.

Currently available on iPhone 14 and newer models, this service requires some prior setup and works in the US and Canada. Unlike the SOS feature, it’s not for emergencies but rather for staying in touch during outdoor adventures or when traveling in remote areas.

How to Set Up Satellite Messaging on an iPhone:

  1. Ensure your device is running iOS 18 and that iMessage is turned on. Go to Settings > Messages > iMessage.

  2. Your recipients also need to be running iOS 18 for you to send an iMessage via satellite. Otherwise, it will default to SMS.

  3. Update your Family Sharing group and ensure that your emergency contacts are set. Satellite messaging can be used to contact these individuals when you’re off the grid.

  4. To use SMS fallback, go to Settings > Messages and enable Send as Text Message.

How to Use Satellite Messaging:

  1. Open the Messages app when there’s no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

  2. A satellite prompt will appear. Tap Use Messages via Satellite.

  3. Follow on-screen instructions to connect to a satellite. A green dot and satellite icon will confirm the connection. If the signal is weak, an arrow will guide you to improve it.

  4. Type your message and send. It may take a few minutes to transmit, and the recipient will be notified that you're messaging via satellite.

How to Share Your Location via Satellite on iPhone

For those in need of location-sharing in remote areas, Find My on iPhone can share your whereabouts with friends and family via satellite.

How to Set Up Location Sharing:

  1. Open the Find My app and enable Share My Location.

  2. When you’re out of cell service, open the Find My app, tap Me, and then tap Send My Location.

  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to send your location via satellite, which can be updated every 15 minutes.

The Future of Satellite Communication

As the world faces an increasing number of climate-related disasters and more people seek adventures in remote regions, satellite messaging and SOS features on smartphones are becoming essential. These services not only provide peace of mind but can also be a literal lifesaver in times of crisis.

Both Apple's Emergency SOS and Google's Satellite SOS allow users to stay connected during emergencies, but with iOS 18, iPhone users can also message loved ones from almost anywhere. Whether you’re in the heart of a hurricane or exploring the wilderness, having satellite messaging enabled on your phone could make all the difference.
