Google has just expanded the availability of its new Gemini Live voice chat mode, making it free for all Android users. The update, which was first announced during last month’s Pixel 9 launch event, allows users to engage in real-time voice conversations with the Gemini AI chatbot. Previously limited to Gemini Advanced subscribers, this feature is now accessible to all Android users via the Gemini app or its overlay.

Voice Chat Features: Real-Time Interaction with AI

Gemini Live offers a unique way for users to interact with Google's AI. In this mode, you can ask questions aloud, and the AI will respond in a conversational manner. The best part? You can interrupt Gemini mid-sentence to ask follow-up questions or change the direction of the conversation—making it feel more like a natural dialogue than a one-sided answer session.

The voice interaction is designed to be smooth and intuitive, with several voice options available for users to choose from. Whether you want a specific tone or a more engaging sound, Gemini Live provides a level of customization to suit your preferences.

How to Access Gemini Live on Android

To use the new voice chat feature, simply open the Gemini app or overlay and look for the waveform icon in the bottom-right corner of your screen. Tapping this icon will activate the microphone, allowing you to ask questions aloud. You’ll also see options on your screen to “hold” Gemini’s response if you need time to think, or “end” the conversation when you're finished.

As noted by 9to5Google, the feature is intuitive and user-friendly, making it easy to dive into a real-time conversation with Gemini anytime.

Available in English for Now

For the time being, Gemini Live is only available in English. However, Google has confirmed that it will expand support to additional languages in future updates. The feature is expected to roll out to iOS devices soon, bringing the conversational AI to an even wider audience.

AI Voice Chat: A Growing Trend

Gemini Live isn’t the first AI chatbot to feature a voice interaction mode. OpenAI’s ChatGPT introduced a similar voice chat capability not long ago, allowing users to ask questions aloud and engage in more fluid conversations with AI. However, Gemini Live stands out for its ability to be interrupted mid-answer, which provides a more dynamic and adaptable conversational experience.

With the growing adoption of voice-controlled AI across smartphones and smart devices, Google’s expansion of Gemini Live marks another step forward in making AI assistants more interactive and accessible.
