Search results just got more commercial with relevant products appearing in AI Overviews

Google has officially started rolling out ads in its AI-generated search summaries, known as "AI Overviews." This update means that users searching for solutions or information through Google’s AI responses may now also see product suggestions embedded in those summaries. According to Google, the ads are designed to match the context of user queries, particularly when the search has a “commercial angle.”

For instance, if you’re searching for a way to remove grass stains from your clothes, Google’s AI will not only provide step-by-step tips but also display relevant stain-removal products. These products will appear beneath a “Sponsored” tag, making it clear that they are advertisements.

Commercial Relevance for AI-Powered Ads

This new feature was first tested earlier this year, and Google has now made the decision to expand it further. Craig Ewer, a spokesperson from Google, explained to The Verge that the ads in AI Overviews are intended to help users connect more quickly with relevant businesses, products, and services at the exact moment they are searching for solutions.

For now, the feature is limited to mobile searches within the US, and the ads will only appear when a user query is seen as having a potential commercial purpose.

AI Overviews Now Show Product Ads

This move comes as part of Google’s strategy to further monetize its AI search features, similar to what Microsoft has done with its Copilot chatbot, which also displays ads in its responses. Google’s AI Overviews, which already deliver quick and summarized answers, will now also showcase products and services that match a user’s query.

What Changes for Users?

In addition to ads, Google has made some updates to the formatting of its AI Overviews to enhance user experience. Following feedback from a test in August, the company has redesigned the way cited webpages are displayed, moving them to a more prominent position on the right side of the summary. According to Google, this new design has led to an increase in traffic to supporting websites compared to its previous layout.

In another significant update, Google is rolling out AI-organized search pages. Instead of merely presenting a list of links, this feature displays a custom results page that organizes relevant information. This is currently being tested for recipe and meal-related searches, but it could expand to other categories over time.

What Does This Mean for Businesses and Users?

For businesses, this new advertising feature in AI Overviews represents an opportunity to reach users at a critical point in their search journey — when they’re actively seeking solutions or products. Meanwhile, users benefit from the convenience of having recommended products embedded directly within their search results, potentially making it easier to take action without scrolling through pages of links.

However, this also means that Google’s search experience is becoming more commercialized, with more sponsored content integrated into AI-powered tools. The company will need to strike a balance to ensure users don’t feel overwhelmed by ads when they are simply looking for quick answers.

As Google continues to explore the future of AI-powered search, these updates signify a broader trend of AI technology integrating more closely with online commerce. Users can expect more personalized and commercial search results as AI-driven search tools evolve.
