In a significant security boost, Google is rolling out real-time malware detection through its updated Play Protect service, now available for Pixel 6 and newer devices. Announced at Google I/O, this feature uses live threat detection to spot and report malicious app behavior directly on the device. Unlike traditional app scans at the point of download, this new system continuously monitors app behavior, targeting stealthy malware that may remain dormant initially but later activates malicious actions.

How Live Threat Detection Works

Live threat detection leverages Google’s Private Compute Core to analyze apps in real time, assessing them for unusual or harmful behaviors even after installation. The update, aimed at enhancing Play Protect, is part of Google’s push to improve Android's defenses against evolving security threats. When suspicious activity is detected, users receive an instant notification, allowing them to act quickly. This feature is particularly beneficial in spotting hard-to-detect malware that often slips through initial scans.

Currently, this enhanced Play Protect feature is available on Pixel devices but will soon expand to non-Pixel Android models, including select devices from Lenovo, OnePlus, Nothing, and Oppo.

Additional Security: Scam Call Detection

In a further bid to improve user safety, Google has also introduced scam call detection, available in the beta version of the Phone by Google app on Pixel 6 and newer models. This on-device AI feature analyzes call behavior in real time, identifying common scam indicators such as manipulative speech patterns and fraud-related requests. If the call appears suspicious, users receive an alert encouraging them to disconnect.

While limited to the beta program on Pixel, scam call detection is expected to roll out to additional Android phones in future updates, enhancing security against fraudulent phone calls.

Conclusion

With these advancements, Google strengthens its commitment to safeguarding user data and enhancing Android’s overall security infrastructure. Both live threat detection and scam call analysis bring Android users a more responsive, proactive defense against evolving digital threats.
