Say goodbye to endless scrolling and searching—Gmail’s new update brings key information like package trackers and event details right to the top of your inbox.
Google is rolling out a new update for Gmail that aims to make your inbox smarter and more efficient by introducing enhanced “summary cards.” This new feature is designed to surface key information from your emails—such as package trackers, event details, or bill payments—without you having to dig through endless threads of messages.
What Are Summary Cards?
If you’ve ever shopped online and received an order confirmation email in Gmail, you’ve probably noticed a box at the top summarizing your purchase, along with a package tracking link. Gmail’s new update significantly enhances this feature. Maria Fernandez Guajardo, Gmail's Senior Director of Product, explained that the new summary cards will adapt to provide even more useful and timely information depending on the context.
For instance, if you’re waiting for a package, Gmail might show you the expected delivery date. After the package arrives, it could even offer a quick link to the seller’s return policy. “The action will be relevant to the stage that you are in,” said Guajardo, emphasizing the proactive nature of these new cards.
Categories Getting Smarter
The upgrade will affect four key categories: shopping, events, travel, and bills. The logic behind all of them is the same: instead of forcing users to search for links or important details buried within their inbox, Gmail will automatically elevate the information that matters most.
For example, when you search “Delta” to check on an upcoming flight, a summary card showing the flight details will instantly appear at the top of your search results, saving you from having to wade through countless confirmation emails. Similarly, if you’ve got a package set to arrive soon or a trip about to start, relevant cards will show up directly in your inbox.
A New Way to Interact with Your Inbox
While this new feature promises to simplify email management, Gmail's bold move of placing these cards at the top of users’ inboxes could raise concerns. Some people are very particular about their inbox layouts, so adding extra elements could be met with skepticism. However, Guajardo reassures that the cards won’t clutter your inbox and will be easy to dismiss. “They’re not going to occupy your entire inbox,” she said, noting that the space taken is prime real estate but necessary for offering an efficient experience.
Not Driven by AI, But Smarter Parsing
Interestingly, this isn’t some cutting-edge AI initiative leveraging Google’s Gemini or deep user data. Instead, Gmail’s new summary cards are a product of smarter email parsing—simply getting better at pulling out the most useful information from your messages.
More Features on the Way
Currently, the new cards are being rolled out for purchase-related emails, but Google plans to expand the feature to include other categories, such as travel, events, and bills, in the coming months. The cards are available on both iOS and Android versions of Gmail, and they are expected to provide significant improvements to how users interact with their inbox.
In a world where our inboxes are flooded with more than just emails—ranging from shopping confirmations to event details—this new Gmail update is a welcome step toward simplifying our digital lives. Google seems to be leaning into the idea that email is more about managing information than just communication, and Gmail’s summary cards could become a game-changer for millions of users.
