Epic Games has announced plans to bring its popular game Fortnite to the third-party iOS app store AltStore PAL, which is currently available only in the European Union. This move marks a significant step in Epic's strategy to diversify its distribution channels beyond the traditional app stores dominated by Apple and Google.

Expanding to AltStore PAL

In a blog post detailing its mobile store strategy, Epic Games revealed that Fortnite will soon be available on AltStore PAL. This third-party app store is unique to the EU, aligning with recent regulatory changes that promote competition in the digital market. Epic also hinted at support for “at least two other third-party stores soon,” although specific details and timelines were not provided.

More Games on the Way

Beyond Fortnite, Epic plans to bring Rocket League Sideswipe to AltStore PAL. “We’re very excited to be bringing Fortnite and more to AltStore PAL,” said Riley Testut from AltStore, highlighting the enthusiasm for this new partnership. This expansion is part of Epic’s broader initiative to make its games available on more diverse platforms, providing developers with more equitable opportunities.

Future Plans for iOS and Android

Epic Games is also working on bringing Fortnite to iOS in the EU directly, a development expected to happen “soon.” Additionally, the company has announced plans to launch its own app store for both iOS and Android, further challenging the established dominance of Apple and Google in the mobile app market.

Ending Certain Distribution Partnerships

In a bold move, Epic stated it would end distribution partnerships with mobile stores that act as “rent collectors without competing robustly and serving all developers fairly.” This likely refers to Epic’s ongoing disputes with Apple and Google over their app store practices. Although Epic did not explicitly name these companies, spokesperson Natalie Munoz declined to comment further on this issue.

Departure from Samsung’s Galaxy Store

Epic also plans to pull Fortnite and other apps like Rocket League Sideswipe and Postparty from Samsung’s Galaxy Store. The decision is influenced by two main factors: Samsung’s “Auto Blocker” feature, which blocks sideloading by default (though users can disable it), and the revelations from the US Epic v. Google lawsuit about Google’s attempts to limit competition in the Android app distribution market.

Industry Reactions

While Apple, Google, and Samsung have yet to comment on these developments, Epic's aggressive expansion into third-party app stores signifies a shift in the digital landscape. By embracing alternative platforms and launching its own store, Epic is setting a precedent for greater competition and fairness in app distribution.
