Google Lens in desktop Chrome is getting an AI-powered boost that could revolutionize the way you search online.

Google is rolling out a new feature in desktop Chrome that closely resembles "Circle to Search." This update integrates Google Lens directly into the search box, allowing users to highlight specific parts of a webpage and perform follow-up searches without leaving their current tab.

A Seamless Search Experience

New Google Lens Integration

With this update, users will see a new button in the search box that activates Google Lens. This allows you to select the exact content you want to search for. The results will appear in a sidebar within the same tab, enabling what Google calls a "multisearch" — a combination of text and image searches.

Enhanced Search Functionality

This new feature is designed to enhance the search experience by eliminating the need to navigate away from the current page. Previously, you could activate Google Lens with a right-click or from the three dots menu and view results in a sidebar. The significant enhancement here is the new Lens icon in the search bar and the ability to perform multisearches directly from the sidebar.

According to Chrome VP Parisa Tabriz, this update will roll out globally over the next few days. While the sidebar search results can include Google’s AI Overviews, this feature will initially be available only to US users.

AI-Powered Search Enhancements

Search History Queries

In addition to the Google Lens upgrade, Google is introducing an AI-powered feature that allows users to ask questions about their search history. For instance, you could ask, "What was that ice cream shop I looked at last week?" and receive relevant links from your history about ice cream.

This tool, set to roll out in the US on desktop Chrome in the coming weeks, is opt-in and will utilize a cloud-based model to generate results. Tabriz mentioned that Google is considering running the model on-device in the future to enhance user experience once performance quality meets their standards.

Product Comparison Tool

Google is also adding a new feature to Chrome to assist users in comparing products while shopping online. This tool aims to streamline the online shopping experience, making it easier for users to find the best deals and compare different products directly within the browser.

Conclusion

These updates underscore Google's commitment to integrating AI technology into its products, enhancing user experience by making search more intuitive and efficient. The new Google Lens integration and AI-powered search history queries are set to make Chrome an even more powerful tool for users worldwide.
