Get ready to relive Mario Kart DS and more with online support!

The Delta emulator, one of the most popular emulators for iOS, is about to level up. Developed by Riley Testut, the Delta emulator will soon feature online multiplayer support for Nintendo DS games, giving fans a chance to relive the nostalgia of classic multiplayer games like Mario Kart DS and Pokémon.

This update is a game-changer for mobile gamers, allowing users to experience the DS’s beloved online features—despite Nintendo shutting down the original DS online services in 2014. Testut recently posted a video showcasing Mario Kart DS running on the Delta emulator with online multiplayer functionality. The footage brought back memories for many of us who spent countless hours racing friends on the DS.

How Will Online Multiplayer Work?

Delta’s online functionality will be based on the online support system from melonDS, another popular emulator for Nintendo DS. Instead of Nintendo’s servers, Delta will connect to third-party Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection servers like Kaeru, Wimmfi, and AltWFC. According to Testut, this allows Delta users to race and battle with other Delta users and even players on real DS devices who are connected to these third-party servers.

Testut elaborated on the process:“It’s based on melonDS’s online support, which connects to 3rd-party Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection servers (such as Kaeru, Wimmfi, AltWFC, etc.),” he explained in a conversation with The Verge. “This means all 10 million+ Delta users will be able to connect to other Delta users and users on real devices who are using these 3rd-party Nintendo WFC servers.”

This is great news for DS fans since Nintendo DS games with online multiplayer will once again be fully playable, even years after the official servers were deactivated. However, Testut clarified that online support is currently limited to Nintendo DS games, as they were the ones built with Nintendo WFC support. There’s no plan for the Delta team to host their own servers, which means online multiplayer for DS games will remain free for all users.

When Can You Try It?

While excitement is high, Testut did mention that the feature will be first available in beta for those who subscribe to his Patreon. There’s no official public release date just yet, but the beta period should allow dedicated Delta users to test and provide feedback on the multiplayer experience before it’s rolled out to the broader public.

For those who aren’t part of the beta, this is the perfect time to brush up on your Mario Kart DS skills. With online multiplayer on the horizon, you’ll soon have a chance to face off against players from all over the world once again.

A New Era for Mobile Emulation

This move by Riley Testut signals a new era for mobile emulation. The Delta emulator has been a favorite for iOS users due to its versatility, offering a smooth and polished emulation experience for Game Boy Advance, SNES, Nintendo 64, and Nintendo DS games. Now, with online multiplayer in the works, Delta is positioning itself as the go-to emulator for retro gamers who want to relive the golden days of DS multiplayer, all from their iPhones.

And, for those who enjoy gaming on the go, the Delta emulator’s seamless integration with iOS ensures a user-friendly experience. The addition of online multiplayer will make Delta a must-have app for anyone looking to dive back into the world of Nintendo DS classics.

Final Thoughts

The Delta emulator continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with iOS gaming, and the addition of online multiplayer support for DS games is an exciting development. Whether you’re gearing up to throw shells in Mario Kart DS or battle in Pokémon, the upcoming feature is sure to bring hours of fun and nostalgia.

While the exact public release date is still up in the air, Testut’s dedication to improving Delta for his users is evident. As we wait for the full rollout, it’s a great time to prepare for the return of some classic DS multiplayer action.
