Canon’s long-awaited upgrade to the R5 and its new R1 camera have finally been revealed and will go on sale later this year.
Canon has unveiled its new EOS R5 Mark II and EOS R1 cameras, both of which boast enhanced autofocus performance and computational power, courtesy of the new Digic X processor. This processor includes a Digic Accelerator that powers the innovative Dual Pixel Intelligent AF system. This advanced autofocus system can estimate body, joint, and head areas, and even focus on individuals other than the main subject.
Both cameras feature significant upgrades, such as backside-illuminated sensors with faster readouts and Canon’s unique eye-controlled autofocus, previously available only in the R3. Additionally, filmmakers will appreciate the newly added support for the Canon Log 2 color profile, one of the most requested features.

EOS R5 Mark II: A Sweet Spot for Photos and Videos
The EOS R5 Mark II is designed for those who shoot both photos and videos. It upgrades the original full-frame mirrorless R5, which debuted in 2020 and could shoot 8K video. The Mark II retains the 45-megapixel sensor but features a new stacked design and a faster Digic X processor. These enhancements allow it to achieve a rapid 30fps capture speed, an improvement over the 20fps of its predecessor.
In its initial review, PetaPixel remarked that the R5 Mark II “promises a more compelling blend of image quality and speed” compared to Sony’s A7R V, despite the latter having a higher megapixel count. The publication also lauded the R5 II’s video capabilities, highlighting features like a waveform monitor, zebra display, four-channel audio, and HDR video.

Canon's all-new EOS R1 is aimed at photojournalists who demand top-tier performance. It features a stacked 24.2-megapixel full-frame sensor and the Digic X processor, enabling it to shoot images at an impressive 40fps and providing better resistance to rolling shutter distortions. Despite its focus on still images, the R1 is also capable of recording 4K footage and 6K RAW video.
Pricing and Availability
Both cameras are now available for pre-order on Canon’s website. The R5 Mark II is set to launch in August for $4,299.00 (approximately ₹3,55,000) for the body only, or $5,399.00 (approximately ₹4,46,000) with a kit RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens. The EOS R1 will be released this fall for $6,299.00 (approximately ₹5,20,000), with an estimated arrival date of November 26th.
