Microsoft Bing is trying a new layout that fills your search results page with AI-generated information.
Microsoft Bing is taking a bold step in revolutionizing the search experience by placing AI-generated answers at the forefront while pushing traditional search results to the periphery. This new layout, which is currently being rolled out for a limited number of queries, prioritizes AI-generated summaries that address various aspects of user questions.
A New Search Experience
In this redesigned search experience, when you search for something like "What is a spaghetti western?", Bing now displays a comprehensive summary explaining that it’s a “subgenre of western films produced by Italian filmmakers,” accompanied by bullet points highlighting the genre's key characteristics.
This AI-driven approach goes beyond merely providing a brief summary. For instance, with the spaghetti western query, users will find not only a detailed description of the genre but also a wealth of additional information, such as the genre's history and origins, related videos, a chart of the best and most influential movies, and even details on the music associated with these films. Microsoft ensures transparency by listing its sources beneath each section, while the traditional list of search results appears in a narrower column on the right side of the screen.
Early Look and User Reactions
Microsoft has provided a sneak peek at this new search interface, and it’s quite extensive. The shift from the conventional list of search results to an AI-centric layout is significant. While the feature isn't fully rolled out yet, some users are already expressing concerns. As a regular Bing and Edge user, the hope is that this feature will be either opt-in or come with an option to turn it off. The new design truncates search descriptions after two lines, which could make it more challenging to quickly scan through the first page of actual search results.
Comparison with Google's AI Overviews
Google has introduced a similar feature called AI Overviews, which takes over the top of the search results page with AI-generated summaries. However, this feature faced issues early on, with users reporting inaccurate answers for certain queries. This led Google to manually adjust some of its responses.
Microsoft's Vision and Technology
According to Microsoft, this new search experience combines Bing search with large and small language models. “It understands the search query, reviews millions of sources of information, dynamically matches content, and generates search results in a new AI-generated layout to fulfill the intent of the user’s query more effectively,” the company explains.
Impact on Search Traffic
Microsoft is aware of the potential impact on search traffic and claims that early data suggests the new layout “maintains the number of clicks to websites and supports a healthy web ecosystem.” This suggests that while the presentation of search results is changing, the overall engagement with external websites remains consistent.
Conclusion
Bing’s new AI-driven search layout represents a significant shift in how information is presented to users. By prioritizing AI-generated content, Microsoft aims to provide more comprehensive and contextually relevant answers to user queries. As this feature continues to roll out, it will be interesting to see how users adapt to this new search experience and whether it truly enhances the way we interact with search engines.
