Apple is gearing up for a major overhaul of its smallest desktop computer, the Mac Mini. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the upcoming version of the Mac Mini will undergo its most significant redesign in over a decade, shrinking to a size that approaches that of an Apple TV set-top box. This new, more compact Mac Mini is expected to be released later in 2024, complete with an upgrade to Apple’s latest M4 chip.

A Tiny Powerhouse

The new Mac Mini is set to be far smaller than its predecessor, with a form factor that will likely make it a favorite for those who want powerful computing in a discreet package. Gurman notes that one of the designs Apple has been testing includes “at least” three USB-C ports and an HDMI output, maintaining the Mini’s aluminum casing. The idea of a Mac Mini that could easily sit on a TV stand or blend seamlessly into any desktop setup is appealing, particularly for those who use their Mini as a media server or a compact workstation.

M4 Chip Upgrade

The redesigned Mac Mini will also receive a significant internal upgrade with the introduction of Apple’s M4 chip. The M4, which made its debut in the latest iPad Pro, is expected to gradually become the standard across Apple’s entire desktop and laptop lineup. The 2024 Mac Mini will follow Apple’s current strategy by offering two variants: one with the standard M4 chip and a more powerful version featuring the M4 Pro. While the M4 version of the Mini is expected to ship later this year, the M4 Pro variant might not be available until October, according to Gurman.

A Long-Awaited Redesign

The Mac Mini’s current design has remained relatively unchanged for over a decade. Despite some updates to its internals and ports, the overall form factor has stayed the same since its major redesign in 2010. Apple last refreshed the Mac Mini in 2023, offering two models: one with the M2 chip and another with the M2 Pro. The upcoming 2024 model, with its smaller size and more powerful internals, marks the first significant design shift in years.

For many, the idea of a Mac Mini that’s nearly as small as an Apple TV is incredibly exciting. This compact powerhouse could be perfect for users who need a versatile desktop computer that doesn’t take up much space, or for those who want a discreet yet powerful media center that can easily connect to their home theater setup.

What to Expect

As Apple continues to refine its desktop lineup, the Mac Mini is set to play a crucial role in offering users a compact yet powerful computing option. With the new M4 chip, users can expect even better performance for everyday tasks, creative work, and more. The smaller form factor will also make the Mac Mini an attractive option for those looking to declutter their workspace or integrate their computer into a home entertainment system.

The 2024 Mac Mini is shaping up to be a significant release for Apple, combining cutting-edge technology with a sleek, minimalist design. As we approach its anticipated launch later this year, Apple fans and tech enthusiasts alike are eager to see how this tiny powerhouse will fit into their digital lives.
