With enhanced multitasking, private spaces, and better security, Android 15 promises a more refined mobile experience.

After months of anticipation, Google has finally rolled out the developer version of Android 15, and while it’s not yet available for general users, this release provides a glimpse into what’s coming to supported Pixel devices in the next few weeks. Here’s a breakdown of the key features and improvements that Android 15 brings, from multitasking upgrades to enhanced privacy features.

1. Enhanced Multitasking for Larger Displays

Android 15 introduces a more seamless multitasking experience, especially for tablets and devices with larger screens. Now, users can pin the taskbar permanently, offering a more desktop-like feel. Another exciting addition is the ability to save split-screen app combinations, meaning you can quickly jump back into your favorite pair of apps with ease. These app combinations can also be pinned to the taskbar, making multitasking more efficient than ever.

2. Private Space for Your Most Sensitive Data

Android 15 is enhancing privacy with the introduction of a new Private Space. This secure area allows users to lock away sensitive apps and data behind an additional layer of security, such as a fingerprint or passcode. It creates a separate section within the app drawer, where you can install and run apps like Google Chrome, Photos, or even a secondary Camera app. This gives users greater control over their most private content, making it harder for anyone to access without proper verification.

For Samsung users, this feature is reminiscent of the Secure Folder, but now it's integrated into the Android system itself, providing better protection across devices.

3. Predictive Back Gesture

The oddly named Predictive Back feature enhances navigation. Now, when users swipe to go back, they’ll see a preview of the screen they’re returning to. For instance, if you’re leaving a website, you’ll get a glimpse of the previous page or the home screen before completing the gesture. This feature ensures a smoother and more intuitive navigation experience.

4. Partial Screen Recording

Android 15 introduces the ability to record just a portion of the screen instead of capturing the entire display. This is particularly useful for those creating tutorials, troubleshooting issues, or simply recording a specific section of an app. Developers can also incorporate this feature into their apps, offering more flexibility for users who need to share information in a more targeted way.

5. Improved PDF Management

Managing PDFs is now simpler and more efficient in Android 15, with features like annotations, password protection, and searching available directly at the system level. While third-party apps like Google Drive have long supported these features, having them integrated into the OS means greater consistency and convenience across all apps.

6. Redesigned Volume Sliders

A small but noticeable change is the redesign of the volume slider panel. When adjusting volumes for media, alarms, or calls, the interface now takes up more room on the screen, making it easier to fine-tune your settings. Additionally, you can now access connected Bluetooth devices from the same panel, streamlining the audio experience.

7. Satellite Messaging Support

One of the standout new features in Android 15 is satellite messaging. While Android 14 on the Pixel 9 supports emergency SOS messages via satellite in the U.S., Android 15 goes a step further by adding support for SMS, MMS, and RCS messaging via satellite networks. This ensures that users can stay connected even in areas without cellular coverage.

8. Richer Widget Previews

Widgets have always been an integral part of Android, and Android 15 takes them a step further by allowing developers to offer rich previews of widgets. For instance, when adding a contact widget, users will now see how it looks with actual contact information, making customization more intuitive.

9. Better Low-Light Camera Preview and Flash Control

Taking photos and videos in low light just got easier with Android 15’s improved camera preview. Users will now have better visibility when trying to frame shots or scan QR codes in dim environments. In addition, there’s now more granular control over the flash intensity, allowing you to adjust it up or down as needed.

10. Customizable Vibration Patterns

Android 15 lets users set custom vibration patterns for specific notification channels. For instance, you can have one vibration for emails and a different one for text messages. This feature enhances accessibility and allows users to differentiate between types of notifications without even looking at their phone.

11. AI-Powered TalkBack

TalkBack, Android’s accessibility feature, gets a significant upgrade in Android 15, thanks to the Gemini Nano AI model. Now, users can get detailed image descriptions even without an internet connection. This is particularly useful for those with visual impairments, providing a more comprehensive understanding of on-screen images.

12. One-Time Password Protection

To enhance security, Android 15 introduces a feature that hides one-time passwords (OTPs) from notifications. This minimizes the risk of OTPs being stolen by someone looking over your shoulder or via screen recording. It’s a simple yet effective way to protect your login credentials.

13. Anti-Theft Protection

Google has also added several features to deter phone thieves. The new Theft Detection Lock uses AI to detect if your phone is snatched, automatically locking the screen. Additionally, Android 15 introduces a feature that prevents your phone from being factory reset without your Google account credentials, adding an extra layer of security against theft.

14. Streamlined Passkey Authentication

Passkeys, the password-free authentication method, get a tweak in Android 15. The account selection and confirmation screens have been merged into one, making the login process quicker and smoother. Google has also added a new restore feature that makes it easier to transfer passkeys when switching devices.

15. Other Tweaks and Improvements

As with every major Android release, Android 15 brings a host of smaller tweaks aimed at improving performance, security, and battery life. These include more efficient video processing, better foreground app handling, and enhanced security protections against malicious apps.

With Android 15, Google is refining the Android experience across the board, adding features that enhance usability, privacy, and security. Whether you’re using it for multitasking, capturing low-light photos, or keeping your data more secure, Android 15 delivers thoughtful improvements that will make everyday tasks smoother and safer.
