Adobe's AI-powered video tools, including Generative Extend and Text-to-Video, bring powerful new features to creators.
Adobe has officially entered the generative AI video space with a set of impressive new tools designed to revolutionize video editing and creation. Announced at the Adobe MAX conference, the company’s Firefly Video Model is now rolling out in beta, offering new features within Premiere Pro and the Firefly web app. These tools promise to streamline workflows, allowing users to extend video clips, generate footage from still images, and even create short videos from text prompts.
This launch signifies a major leap in AI video technology, with Adobe aiming to provide "commercially safe" content generation — a notable edge over other platforms under scrutiny for using scraped or unapproved training data.
Generative Extend: A Game Changer for Premiere Pro
One of the most exciting tools is Generative Extend, now available in beta for Premiere Pro. This tool allows editors to easily extend the start or end of clips by up to two seconds, addressing common challenges like footage being too short or needing adjustments in the middle of a scene. This feature is particularly useful for fixing small errors, such as shifting eye lines or unintentional movements, without requiring costly reshoots.

Though limited to short extensions, Generative Extend can significantly enhance workflow efficiency by generating footage at 720p or 1080p resolution at 24 FPS. While it's not a full replacement for longer reshoots, it offers a quick fix for minor issues, providing editors with more flexibility and saving time on retakes.
Additionally, this tool can extend audio tracks for smoother edits. It can prolong sound effects and ambient noise by up to ten seconds, though it's currently unable to extend dialogue or music tracks.
Text-to-Video and Image-to-Video: New Horizons for Content Creation
Beyond video editing, Adobe is also bringing powerful AI-driven content generation to the Firefly web app. The Text-to-Video and Image-to-Video tools, first teased in September, are now in limited public beta. These tools allow users to generate video footage simply by inputting text descriptions or uploading images as references.
For example, users can input a prompt like “a sunset over a city skyline” and the AI will generate a short video clip based on the description. The tool supports a range of video styles, from realistic film to 3D animation and stop motion, providing creators with plenty of creative options. Adobe has also included camera control settings that allow users to adjust elements like angles, motion, and shooting distance for further customization.

The Image-to-Video tool goes a step further by letting users use both an image and a text prompt to fine-tune their results. This feature can be especially helpful for generating b-roll or visualizing scenes that need reshoots. However, it’s still in development, and users have noted some imperfections, such as wobbling cables or shifting backgrounds in the generated footage.
Despite its limitations — such as a maximum clip length of five seconds and resolution capped at 720p — the potential for these tools is massive. Competing tools like OpenAI’s Sora and Meta’s Movie Gen have promised similar capabilities but are not yet available to the public, giving Adobe a significant head start.
Commercial Viability and Ethical AI Use
A key advantage of Adobe’s Firefly video tools is their focus on commercial safety. Unlike other platforms, Adobe’s AI models are trained on licensed data, ensuring that generated content is safe for commercial use. This is a critical consideration, especially as other AI models, like Runway, face legal challenges for allegedly using scraped content without permission.
Additionally, videos created or edited with Adobe’s Firefly tools come with Content Credentials, a feature that embeds metadata to disclose AI usage and ownership rights. This transparency could be a game changer for professionals worried about the ethical use of AI-generated content.
What’s Next?
Adobe’s foray into generative AI video has set the stage for future developments in video editing and content creation. While the current beta tools are still limited in scope, Adobe is actively working on improvements, such as a "turbo mode" to speed up generation times. For now, the tools take around 90 seconds to generate content, but users can expect faster turnaround times in the future.
With the introduction of these AI-powered features, Adobe is positioning itself as a leader in the evolving world of AI creativity, offering tools that are practical, innovative, and safe for professionals and hobbyists alike.
