Nanoleaf confirms testing of the feature on its Matter-compatible smart bulbs, slated for release with iOS 18 this fall.

Apple is bringing a significant upgrade to its smart home ecosystem with the introduction of Adaptive Lighting for Matter-compatible smart lights. The feature, which has been a part of Apple Home since iOS 14, will now extend to a wider range of devices when iOS 18 rolls out this fall. This enhancement will allow more users to enjoy the automatic adjustment of light color temperature throughout the day, making their homes feel brighter and more inviting or cozy and warm, depending on the time of day.

Expanding Adaptive Lighting to Matter Devices

Adaptive Lighting has long been a popular feature among Apple Home users, but its availability has been limited to a few brands, such as Nanoleaf and Philips Hue. With the integration of Matter—a universal smart home standard co-developed by Apple, Amazon, Google, and others—this feature is set to become more widely accessible. Matter is designed to improve interoperability between smart home devices, allowing them to communicate seamlessly across different ecosystems.

Nanoleaf, a leading player in the smart lighting industry, has confirmed that it is actively testing Adaptive Lighting on its line of Matter-compatible Essentials lights. In an interview with The Verge, Nanoleaf CEO Gimmy Chu revealed that the company has been working closely with Apple to ensure a smooth user experience once the feature is released. “We are one of the partners that are part of the launch of Adaptive Lighting on Matter products,” said Chu. “For the past several months, we’ve been doing extensive testing to ensure that the customers will have a great experience.”

The Benefits of Adaptive Lighting

Adaptive Lighting is designed to automatically adjust the color temperature of smart lights throughout the day. In the morning, lights might be cooler to simulate daylight, helping to energize and wake you up. As the day progresses, the lights gradually shift to warmer tones, creating a relaxing atmosphere as evening approaches. This dynamic lighting adjustment can enhance the overall ambiance of a home, making it more aligned with natural light patterns.

While Adaptive Lighting has been available for select HomeKit-enabled devices, its expansion to Matter-compatible products marks a significant milestone. This will not only benefit users with Nanoleaf and Philips Hue products but could also extend to other popular smart lighting brands like Govee, Lifx, Wiz, and Linkind. As more manufacturers adopt the Matter standard, the availability of Adaptive Lighting across different brands will likely increase, making it easier and more affordable for users to implement this feature throughout their homes.

A Long-Awaited Update for Smart Lighting Enthusiasts

The journey to bring Adaptive Lighting to Matter devices has been long-awaited by many smart home enthusiasts. When Nanoleaf and Philips Hue initially released Matter versions of their products, users were disappointed to find that Adaptive Lighting was not available. The reason, according to Chu, was that Apple had not yet enabled support for the feature on smart lights connected through Matter. However, with the upcoming release of iOS 18, this issue will be resolved, and users will finally be able to take full advantage of their Matter-enabled smart bulbs.

The Future of Adaptive Lighting and Smart Home Integration

While Adaptive Lighting remains an exclusive feature of Apple Home and is not part of the Matter specification, there is hope for broader adoption in the future. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), the organization behind Matter, has indicated that more advanced lighting features similar to Adaptive Lighting are on its roadmap. If these features are implemented, they could be supported across all Matter-compatible platforms, including Amazon Alexa and Google Home.

For now, Apple Home users can look forward to an enhanced smart home experience with the introduction of Adaptive Lighting for Matter-compatible devices. This update is poised to make smart lighting more intuitive and accessible, allowing users to create a more comfortable and personalized living environment with minimal effort.
